Because of its lenient gun laws, Missouri is considered one of the most gun-friendly states. Unlike many other states, in Missouri you do not need a concealed carry permit before you purchase a gun.
Beginning January 1st, 2017, residents will be under the constitutional carry statutes. As a result of the Second Amendment right that guarantees your right to bear arms, you will be able to carry a concealed weapon without needing a permit.
Understandably, you may wonder why you would need this documentation. Even though it’s not required, it’s still in your best interest to get a concealed carry permit. Here are four reasons why.
1. It Makes Buying Guns Easier
Although you don’t need a concealed carry permit to buy a gun in Missouri, you will have to fill out a 4473 form and go through a background check. Your information will then be transmitted through the FBI NICS check system. However, if you have a concealed carry permit, you know that you have a much higher chance of the system processing your information instantly.
2. It Helps You Comply With Local Municipalities and Other State Laws
Local municipalities throughout Missouri can pass ordinances that prevent you from carrying a concealed firearm in public unless you have a permit. Depending on where you go, you may face felony charges for violating these laws. With a permit, you are protected from local statutes and can still carry your firearm in public.
Likewise, if you travel to a different state, you cannot carry a concealed weapon unless that state is also a constitutional carry state—and there are only 11 total in the entire US. So, if you wish to travel to the other 35 continental states, having a permit lets you retain reciprocity (meaning that the other state recognizes your concealed carry permit and will honor and recognize its validity).
Reciprocity varies by state, so always check this information before you travel. Additionally, you may only want to get a five-year permit to maintain reciprocity despite these changes.
3. It Gives You Important Education
Education is the key to safe gun use, whether you’re a first-time gun buyer or you’ve been around guns your entire life. Before getting a concealed carry permit, you need to take concealed carry weapon (CCW) classes.
At a CCW class, you learn how to operate a firearm safely, including loading, firing, and unloading—and a well-taught class will provide you with the necessary education to know your rights if and when you have to use your weapon in self-defense. When you do apply for and receive your concealed carry permit, you show that you are committed to responsible firearm ownership and use.
4. It Helps You Gain Others’ Trust
Imagine that you get pulled over for speeding. Now imagine that the police officer sees the gun in your car and suspects you did something illegal.
Even though you are legally allowed to carry a gun without a permit, it’s in your best interest to show the police officer your concealed weapons permit. This shows the officer that you are trained to use a gun and that you have gone through necessary background checks to own that gun.
In another scenario, people who do not know about Missouri gun laws may see you carrying a gun and call the police. Showing your concealed carry permit can help you quickly diffuse the situation.
Requirements to Get a Missouri Concealed Carry Permit
In order to get a Missouri permit, you must:
- Be 21 years old (18 for military).
- Be a resident of Missouri (or stationed in Missouri for the military).
- Pass a background check. You must not have committed certain crimes, such as felonies or weapons-related misdemeanors.
- Not have been pronounced mentally incompetent in the last five years
- Have training from a CCW class. At the class, you must shoot twenty rounds at a target seven yards away. You must hit the target fifteen out of twenty rounds.
There is a fee up to $100 to get the permit, and a fee up to $50 every five years to renew your permit.
Even though you can carry a gun without a concealed carry permit, it’s still a good idea to get one. Make sure you take classes from a company that’s experienced and certified. Sign up for the concealed weapons classes at Razorback Armory today.
